Well anchored in a heritage building at the corner of Bay and Douglas, Bill Hartley Insurance Services has been in business providing all types of insurance for over 60 years. It has become a landmark in the community and a synonym of great service. We are a trustworthy, family-owned and operated business with long-standing roots in insurance.

Who was Bill?

Bill Hartley worked in insurance for many years before starting his own office. Mr. Hartley started as a life insurance agent for Co-op Life in 1950. He had seen many a widow left destitute by a husband’s passing and was dedicated to the cause of life insurance. Within a year he became the first Co-op representative to write a million dollars worth of applications for life insurance. He remained their top salesperson for several years, and was a co-founder of Co-op Fire and Casualty, now The Co-operators. He sold their first home insurance policy in BC.

For the four terms he served as an MLA in the BC legislature, Bill continued to work in the insurance business; he also became the insurance critic for the party in opposition. He was an advocate for the people of BC and insurance was his cause. He believed everyone should be protected and was instrumental in the creation of the Insurance Corporation of British Columbia.

It is with this wealth of knowledge and experience that Bill and Marianne Hartley opened Bill Hartley Agencies Ltd in 1976. Bill’s and Marianne’s dedication to serve and help others, and improve the world we live in, translated into a professional business centred on customer advocacy, quality and integrity. Their vision was built upon this solid foundation of values that still influences every business decision.

Eric Hartley

Bill’s and Marianne’s son, joined the business in 1979 and took the helm in 1986 when his father officially retired. Eric is at the heart of the business, caring for and upholding the company’s founding values. He believes it is a priority to be your advocate, offer you the best protection possible and stand with you in the event of a claim. With over 30 years of experience and a commitment to continuous progress, he has developed a business which is uniquely positioned to provide all of your insurance needs.
